How to Define Useful Work Before You Start

A surprising amount of wasted effort begins before the work starts. Someone says study, clean the kitchen, improve the report, or fix the process, and everybody acts as if the result is obvious. It is not.

Ask who receives the result. A report has a reader. A meal has people who need to be fed. An assignment has an evaluator. Useful work usually changes a condition for somebody.

If you cannot name the receiver, the changed condition, and what finished looks like, activity will keep posing as progress. Heeded writing is meant to leave you with a clearer way to think, decide, prepare, or act — even if you never create an account.
